Gokudou was originally a Buddhist term that meant "master of the path." During the Edo period (1603-1868), people who demonstrated chivalry by assisting the weak and struggling members of society were referred to as "Gokudou-sha" out of respect. With the passage of time, the term Gokudou has come to be synonymous with Yakuza, a Japanese syndicate that runs the streets. Gokudou operates behind the scenes, in the shadows, and wields considerable power in Japanese society.
